Scientific journal Cell: NAD+ can activate hematopoietic stem cells as well as treat leukemia and lymphoma

On March 7, 2019, the research team led by Olaia Naveiras from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (Eécole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, EPFL) and Nicola Vannini from the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research revealed that NAD+ supplements can also enhance the activity of hematopoietic stem cells. Related research findings have been published in the journal Cell.
The research team found that adding nicotinamide ribose to the diet of the experimental group mice (whose blood cells have been eliminated by irradiation) can accelerate their blood recovery and increase their survival rate by 80%. Further studies show that NAD+ supplementation can promote the asymmetric division of HSC, promote the circulation efficiency and regeneration of mitochondria, and eventually stimulate hematopoietic stem cells. Nicotinamide ribose is a type of NAD+ supplement. Furthermore, studies have discovered that NAD+ supplements can also promote the production of white blood cells in immunodeficient mice.
This is the first study to demonstrate that NAD+ can be used as a daily supplement to enhance the blood recovery ability of cancer patients after radiotherapy or chemotherapy. The researchers said, "We expect that NAD+ supplements and other mitochondrial regulators can become a supplement to enhance the capacity of stem cells and accelerate blood production."
